Vanlife Chronicles: Route and Overnight Stays During August 2023 (Month 2)

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

Welcome back all!

This is our second entry providing insights into the places we ended up sleeping, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses for overnight stays. August was the second month that we were on the road, and it really solidified our #vanlife experience. We were able to slow down a bit as there was some breaks in between family and friends' events - we ended up cutting our miles almost in half, though it was still a pretty active driving month. We stayed mostly in the Northeast as we had some events that were still happening in that area.

All in all, on our route we ended up driving 2,535.1 miles in a span of 31 nights! This was a total of 12 states + DC (8 of which we spent a night in) and 14 different cities. Additionally, we ended up spending $448.65 for the places we slept, the majority ($373) of which was spent due to a hotel stay for a wedding.

The below map displays the states (+ DC) that we passed through, as well as the states we ended up sleeping at least one night in.

We mentioned that we've been recording our places we've slept, and we've continued to do so. Here is the breakdown of the nights that we've stayed into categories:

  • Public parking lots - think parking lots by piers, or ones that cost $ per hour

  • Campgrounds

  • Business parking lots - Walmart, Cabela's, Cracker Barrel, etc.

  • Family and friends driveways

  • Harvest Hosts - a program that offers overnight stays at over 4600+ locations (including farms, wineries, museums, and more)

  • Street parking - city street parking, or side streets in some areas

  • Hotel

In the below graph, you can see a full breakdown of overnight stays in the month of August; the first number is the total number of nights stayed for that category, followed by the category percentage based on the total nights in August. As you can see, 42% (13 out of 31) of our nights were spent with friends and/or family, which we attribute to all of the wedding events we had this month.
