Welcome back folks!
This is the last entry before we are caught up!! Number six - December! Crazy that six months flew by so easily. We'll keep providing insights into the places we ended up sleeping, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses for overnight stays. December mostly consisted of the Florida Keys for our own exploration, family time in Connecticut for the holidays, and then our birthday celebrations and New Years in New Orleans.
We started off in Miami and end made our way to the Keys for about 12 days. Although a lot of our dining was home-cooked meals, we did indulge in numerous key lime pies throughout the time there. Once we finished up with the Keys, we drove back to St. Pete to drop off ALVan with some family while we flew to NYC to spend time with Colton's parents for the holiday season + a Broadway show. We then all drove up to CT to spend Christmas and Christmas Eve with Olivia's family... I think everyone gained a healthy holiday 10. After the CT, we flew back down to FL and decided on a whim to go to New Orleans for Colton's birthday and NYE, which ended up being an absolute blast - we already look forward to going back!
All in all, on our route we ended up driving 1,672.2 miles (van only) in a span of 31 nights! We hit up a total of 6 states (4 of which we spent a night in) and 13 different cities. This was our most expensive month in terms of stay costs as we spent $1,424.19 - the Keys are tough to stealth camp, so we purchased campsites for our time there.
We mentioned that we've been recording our places we've slept, and we've continued to do so. Here is the breakdown of the nights that we've stayed into categories:
Public parking lots - think parking lots by piers, rest stops, or $ per hour lots
Campgrounds
Business parking lots - Walmart, Cabela's, Cracker Barrel, etc.
Family and friends driveways
Harvest Hosts - a program that offers overnight stays at over 4600+ locations (including farms, wineries, museums, and more)
Street parking - city street parking, or side streets in some areas
Hotel
In the below graph, you can see a full breakdown of overnight stays in the month of December; the first number is the total number of nights stayed for that category, followed by the category percentage based on the total nights this month. As you can see, 29% (9 out of 31) of our nights were spent at campgrounds or with friends/family - this was because of the holidays and because of staying in the Keys.
