Welcome back folks!
Month eight in the books, and there was an extra day (leap year, woot woot) - maybe that's why February felt exceptionally slow! Just kidding, that's more than likely because we've been so swamped at work and weren't able to move locations as frequently. It also didn't help that we got hit with a random 'blizzard' while we were in Sante Fe, NM which made already tricky roads trickier. We actually had no idea how many roads in New Mexico are dirt. Yes, this even includes some main highways.
In all seriousness though it was actually nice to slow down a bit. Now that we've made it out west, there's far less city-dwelling we want to do and way more parks/nature that take some extra time.
All in all, we stayed 17 nights in New Mexico and 12 nights in Arizona during February - more details are in the table at the end of this post.
New Mexico was a beautiful and unique outdoorsy place to visit (we only scratched the surface), but our favorite experience was actually a cocktail bar in Albuquerque - shoutout to Tammy and staff at Happy Accidents, we highly recommend this place!
We ended up driving 2,418.6 miles (van only) in a span of 29 nights! We hit up a total of 3 states (2 of which we spent a night in) and 12 different cities. Super inexpensive month for, spending only $5.10 on overnight stays. We'll keep providing insights into the places we ended up sleeping, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses for overnight stays.
We mentioned that we've been recording our places we've slept, and we've continued to do so. Here is the breakdown of the nights that we've stayed into categories:
Public parking lots - think parking lots by piers, rest stops, or $ per hour lots
Campgrounds
Business parking lots - Walmart, Cabela's, Cracker Barrel, etc.
Family and friends driveways
Harvest Hosts - a program that offers overnight stays at over 4600+ locations (including farms, wineries, museums, and more)
Street parking - city street parking, or side streets in some areas
Hotel
In the below graph, you can see a full breakdown of overnight stays in the month of February; the first number is the total number of nights stayed for that category, followed by the category percentage based on the total nights in for this month. As you can see, 45% (13 out of 29) of our nights were spent in Business Parking Lots. Not the most glamorous places to stay, but it they worked well since this month has been crazy at work!
