Vanlife Chronicles: Route and Overnight Stays During September 2023 (Month 3)

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Welcome back friends and fam!

This is our third entry providing insights into the places we ended up sleeping, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses for overnight stays. In September, we had a break between wedding events that we were attending during our #vanlife experience. We utilized this time to travel a bit west towards to cross off some places we hadn't been to but heard good things about. Though a lot of the places we visited this month were places that we probably wouldn't visit anytime soon, there were still some gems that we found and would recommend to folks to check out!

All in all, on our route we ended up driving 1,700.4 miles in a span of 30 nights! This was a total of 8 states + DC (7 of which we spent a night in) and 15 different cities. Additionally, we ended up spending $204.13 for the places we slept, the majority ($194.13) coming from a hotel night that Colton had to hit so his points wouldn't expire.

We mentioned that we've been recording our places we've slept, and we've continued to do so. Here is the breakdown of the nights that we've stayed into categories:

  • Public parking lots - think parking lots by piers, or ones that cost $ per hour

  • Campgrounds

  • Business parking lots - Walmart, Cabela's, Cracker Barrel, etc.

  • Family and friends driveways

  • Harvest Hosts - a program that offers overnight stays at over 4600+ locations (including farms, wineries, museums, and more)

  • Street parking - city street parking, or side streets in some areas

  • Hotel

In the below graph, you can see a full breakdown of overnight stays in the month of September; the first number is the total number of nights stayed for that category, followed by the category percentage based on the total nights in September. As you can see, 43% (13 out of 31) of our nights were spent with friends and/or family, which we attribute to additional wedding events for this month.
